Some birthdays need pizza.

Some need twenty people, a cake somebody has hidden badly and an increasingly desperate attempt to get everyone into one photograph.

And some birthdays need eight courses.

If you are in that last group, we need to talk about Prévost.

Prévost is at Haycock Manor Hotel in Wansford, in a building with history stretching back to the 16th century.

Its food is modern British.

And this is not somewhere you book because nobody can think of anywhere else to go.

£380 For Two Changes The Conversation Significantly

The Haycock currently advertises an eight-course tasting menu with wine pairing from £380 per couple.

Three hundred and eighty quid let that sink in.

For dinner.

For two.

We thought that deserved saying slowly.

This is not:

“Shall we grab something to eat after the pub?”

This is:

“Your present is dinner. Please do not also expect a watch.”

But that is also the appeal.

If somebody genuinely loves food, an evening spent working through eight courses with paired wines could be far more memorable than buying another thing that ends up in a drawer.

Eight Courses Means You’re Not Going Anywhere Afterwards

There is something quite nice about that.

No cinema to rush for.

No checking whether the pub is still open.

No eating quickly because you have tickets for something at half eight.

Dinner is the night.

You sit down.

The food starts arriving.

The wine starts arriving.

And presumably, somewhere around course six, you stop wondering what time it is.

Prévost also has a five-course tasting-menu-and-wine-pairing offer from £260 per couple if eight courses sounds like your appetite may need a bit of getting into shape first.

There is also a three-course lunch option, so going to Prévost does not automatically require spending £380.

This Is The Other End Of Our £24 Lunch

And that is partly why this belongs in Taste Trail.

We have talked about two people eating three courses each for £24.

Now we have two people eating eight courses with wine for £380.

Both are eating out.

They are just having very different Weekdays.

Taste Trail should have room for both.

Sometimes you want the bargain.

Sometimes you want the blowout.

And sometimes it is fun just knowing what is sitting at the other end of the scale.

Prévost currently serves dinner Wednesday to Saturday, and the restaurant says the minimum age for evening dining is 12.

So here is the question.

If somebody handed you £380 and said you HAD to spend it on one meal for two, would you choose eight courses and wine — or spend it completely differently?
