If Peterborough Taste Trail could test one local dish or food trend next, what should it be?

Our starting shortlist includes Nepalese momos or thali, Polish pierogi, Caribbean street food, a market-food challenge and a Lincoln Road world-food crawl.

These aren’t being presented as winners. They’re ideas to get the conversation moving.

The best nomination won’t simply be “go here”. It’ll give us something fair to find out.

For example, a momo test could compare filling, texture, spice, portion size, vegetarian choices, service and value for money.

A pierogi test could look at the range of savoury and sweet fillings, how the dumplings are cooked and what you get for the price.

A Caribbean street-food test might focus on portion size, flavour, heat and value.

A food-hall or Lincoln Road challenge would need a different scorecard: variety, freshness, accessibility, queue times and the total cost of eating your way around the area.

Peterborough has plenty of places that could make this more interesting than another predictable burger ranking.

The Gurkha Taste at Hereward Cross lists momos and Nepalese thali. Pierogarnia offers homemade Polish dumplings in savoury and sweet versions.

The city market on Bridge Street has a food hall alongside butchers, a fishmonger and a delicatessen. Lincoln Road brings together world-food shops, bakeries, markets and family-run restaurants.

That gives us several routes but a nomination alone doesn’t prove that a dish is the best, the most popular or even a fair comparison.

Before any test is published, menus, prices, opening times and availability would need checking.

The tasting brief would also need to be agreed in advance, so one business isn’t judged on a different set of rules from another.
