Bored With Your Usual Peterborough Dinner? Try One Of These Three |
West African cooking, Portuguese flavours and Nepalese street food three very different ways to escape the pizza-curry-burger loop without leaving Peterborough. |

There's a particular conversation that happens when nobody can decide where to eat.
“What do you fancy?”
“Don't mind.”
“Indian?”
“Had one Thursday.”
“Pizza?”
“Had one Saturday.”
“Burgers?”
Silence.
Eventually somebody suggests the place everybody already knows and another potentially interesting dinner quietly dies.
So here's a different plan.
Don't choose the restaurant first.
Choose somewhere that gives you something you don't normally eat.
Peterborough can do that rather well.
Mums Sensations: when you fancy going properly off-pisteIf Nigerian and West African food isn't already part of your regular rotation, Mums Sensations gives you a reason to change that.
It's listed by Discover Peterborough for Nigerian and West African cooking, with dishes built around ingredients including rice, yam, beans, soups and seasoned meat and fish.
This isn't really the night for ordering the closest thing to something you already recognise.
If the menu is unfamiliar, ask what's popular or what they'd recommend for somebody eating West African food for the first time. That's half the fun.
And it's certainly a more interesting answer to “Where shall we eat tonight?” than automatically opening the same restaurant app again.
Ponto de Amigos: a little Portuguese detour on Lincoln RoadThen there's Ponto de Amigos on Lincoln Road.
Portuguese food gives the evening a completely different direction again.
And Lincoln Road is exactly the sort of place Taste Trail should be exploring more often.
It's one of those Peterborough roads you can travel along hundreds of times while barely scratching the surface of what's actually being cooked there.
You don't need an airport, suitcase or long weekend.
Sometimes changing the scenery at dinner only requires changing where you turn off.
Momoz & More: start with the dumplings
Over on Westgate, Momoz & More takes us somewhere else again: Nepalese street food and South Asian flavours.
And the clue to where we'd start is sitting in the name. Momos.
They're dumplings, usually filled and served with dipping sauces or chutneys, and exactly the sort of food that can turn “I'll just try one” into a remarkably short-lived plan.
This feels more informal than a big occasion meal the sort of option to remember for lunch, an easy evening or whenever the standard takeaway order is beginning to feel very standard indeed.
Three places. Three completely different dinners.
We're not declaring these Peterborough's three greatest restaurants. We haven't secretly eaten our way through every menu in the city and emerged with a clipboard and a league table.
They're here for a simpler reason.
They make Peterborough's food map more interesting.
One evening could take you towards West Africa.
Another towards Portugal.
Another towards Nepal.
And there must be dozens more hiding around the city.
So tell us in the comments: which Peterborough restaurant, café or takeaway serves something people really should try at least once and what's the dish you'd tell a first-timer to order? |
