There should be a small social prize for knowing a restaurant nobody else in the group was about to suggest. |

The best recommendations aren't always Peterborough's biggest names. They're the places that make somebody look up and say, “Where's that? I've never been.”
So we've found three for your lunch list: Polish dumplings on Winslow Road, freshly baked focaccias and loaded fries in Orton, and an independent café on St John's Street.
First up, the dumplings.
Pierogi beat another sandwich
Pierogarnia on Winslow Road specialises in Polish dumplings, with enough fillings to make choosing considerably harder than expected.
The savoury versions include meat; potato, cottage cheese and fried onion; sausage and bacon; cabbage and mushrooms; and spinach, cottage cheese and garlic.
Sweet pierogi head in another direction, with fillings including cheese and vanilla, blueberry and strawberry.
There's more than dumplings, too. The wider Polish menu includes pork chop, stuffed cabbage rolls, white sausage and ribs.
That's what makes Pierogarnia an interesting lunch suggestion.
You're not travelling across Peterborough simply to order another variation on something you could have eaten anywhere.
And suggesting pierogi sounds considerably more adventurous than:
“There's a café round the corner.”
Peckish Brothers doesn't require everyone to agreeFour people going for lunch can somehow develop five different opinions about what they fancy.
Peckish Brothers at Orton Gate has an answer to that. Its menu stretches from cooked breakfasts and salads to subs, focaccias, smash burgers, loaded fries and pasta.
The subs and focaccias are particularly tempting.
Current combinations include prosciutto, mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes and olives; mortadella with stracciatella; and chicken with bacon and cheese.
The bread is baked daily in the shop.
So one person can still be contemplating breakfast while somebody opposite has moved firmly into double-bacon-cheeseburger territory.
Nobody needs to win.
Although anyone ordering loaded fries after announcing “I'm not that hungry” should expect consequences.
Cafe Delí gets the straightforward jobNot every lunch needs to become an expedition.
Cafe Delí on St John's Street covers the familiar café ground: breakfasts, sandwiches, baguettes, paninis, pastries and cakes. And that's precisely why it's here.
There are days for hunting down something you've never eaten before.
There are also days when you want coffee, lunch and somewhere independent to sit without spending half an hour deciding where to go.
Cafe Delí is the name to remember for the second kind.
What's the place you nearly don't want everyone knowing about?
We've given you three. Now we want the one you recommend to friends.
The café hidden somewhere nobody would expect it.
The lunch counter that's much better than it has any right to be.
The family-run place you discovered by accident.
But don't just give us the name.
Tell us what to order.
We want the dumplings, the ridiculous sandwich, the cake you'd drive back for or the lunch that costs far less than you expected.
