There are certain things we spend an entire summer saying we'll do.

“We should have a barbecue.”

“We should go there one weekend.”

“We should sit outside while it's still warm.”

And, of course:

“We should go to that Foodie Friday thing at Ferry Meadows.”

Excellent plan.

Tiny problem.

It's Friday. And this is the last one.

Apparently Summer Would Like Its Fridays Back

Foodie Fridays has been running outside the Visitor Centre at Ferry Meadows, bringing together changing street-food traders, drinks and local musicians.

Today Friday 25 September is the final scheduled date of the season.

Food and drink are available from 3pm, with live music from 5pm until 8pm.

Entry itself is free, although the usual parking charges apply.

Which gives us one final opportunity to turn:

“What are we doing for dinner?”

into something slightly more interesting than standing in Tesco at 6.20pm staring at a pizza you've already eaten twice this month.

This Is Dinner Without Having To Make A Proper Plan

That's probably part of the appeal.

You don't necessarily need the whole:

“Where shall we book?”

“What time?”

“Who's driving?”

“Can they do 7.30?”

“Sarah can't do 7.30.”

“Why?”

“Something about swimming.”

You can head to Ferry Meadows, see what's being served, get something to eat, grab a drink and listen to some music.

The traders and performers have changed across the Fridays, which means the idea hasn't simply been the same menu wheeled out every week.

 It feels less like going out for dinner and more like accidentally having a Friday night.

Sometimes those are better.

And There's Something About Eating Outside When Summer Is Nearly Over

In June, eating outside feels perfectly normal.

By late September it feels like you've beaten the system.

You sit there thinking:

“Look at us. Outside. Eating food. In England.”

Admittedly, somebody will probably mention the temperature.

Someone else will say:

“It's actually quite nice once the sun's out.”

And one member of the group will have brought a coat because they possess the sort of foresight the rest of us won't develop until November.

But that's part of it.

There aren't many of these evenings left.

The Best Bit Might Be Not Knowing What You're Having

We're increasingly interested in food outings where the answer isn't already decided before you've left home.

Street food gives you the opportunity to walk around first.

Have a look.

Smell something.

Change your mind.

Watch somebody else walk past carrying something considerably better than the thing you were about to order.

Then follow them at a socially acceptable distance until you discover where they bought it.

That's on the ground research.

Taste Trail takes this seriously.
